Separate direct-bill and agency-bill timing in agency reports

Compare commission by billing method without mixing premium collections and agency income. Show timing and source differences.

The short answerSegment records by billing method and reconcile each flow to its own commission source. Premium cash collected through the agency should not be compared directly with commission received under another billing method.

Two producers may place similar business but appear to have different income patterns because their billing flows and statement timing differ. A dashboard can mistake that process difference for productivity. The useful comparison keeps placement, booked commission and received commission separate before combining agency totals.

Define the data before the metric

One row represents: one commission item or policy-term summary tagged with its confirmed billing method.

Useful fields: Policy term ID, billing method, carrier, premium, booked commission, commission receipt, relevant dates, return adjustments and source reference.

Confirm billing method from the source rather than inferring it from a receipt. Report placed premium across methods on a consistent basis. Reconcile booked and received commission within each flow. Keep premium collections, remittances and agency income as distinct measures, with finance approving their treatment.

Worked example

The following records and amounts are invented to show the method. They are not customer results, industry benchmarks or a forecast of Covirage performance.

Flow Placed premium Recorded agency commission
Direct bill $100,000 $12,000
Agency bill $100,000 $15,000
Agency premium collection $100,000 cash Not an additional $100,000 of agency income

The listed placed premium is $200,000 and recorded commission is $27,000. Adding the agency's $100,000 premium collection to commission would falsely report $127,000 of agency income. Differences in receipt timing can still make the $27,000 booked figure diverge from cash received.

Use the result in a review

  1. Compare producers within similar billing and line mixes before interpreting receipt-month differences.
  2. Ask finance to identify where each billing flow's commission evidence appears and how returns are recorded.
  3. Show unclassified billing methods so a missing tag does not automatically default into the larger group.

Checks before publishing

  • Reconcile premium and commission separately and prevent collections or remittances from entering the commission numerator.
  • Check that billing-method tags refer to the correct term and have not been overwritten by later renewals.
  • Keep timing bridges for each method before combining cash or outstanding balances.

Where this analysis can mislead

Actual workflows and agreements vary. Billing-method labels alone do not determine revenue recognition, handling obligations or settlement rights. This guide concerns comparability in management analytics.

Explore this question with your own data

Bring a small, authorized sample to Covirage for insurance agencies and brokers. Use the sample to discuss the fields and views your business needs. A dashboard or AI analyst can help explore this question when the required data and definitions are available; missing records still need to be resolved.

Upload sample data to check its structure. Keep unnecessary personal, claims and policyholder details out of an initial sample. The sample check does not establish that every analysis in this guide is available automatically.

Questions people ask

Can agency-bill premium collections be added to commission revenue?

Do not assume so. Premium collections and agency income are different measures; finance should approve their classification and reconciliation.
