Write a quarterly agency board narrative with traceable evidence

Connect each material board-report claim to reconciled evidence. Separate observed movements, explanations and scenarios.

The short answerDraft the narrative from reconciled tables, attach evidence to each material statement and label explanations or scenarios separately from observed results. Include scope changes and material uncertainty.

A board narrative can sound convincing while quietly mixing premium growth, agency income growth and acquired-book contribution. The writing should make those distinctions easier to assess. A claim-to-evidence table is a practical bridge between detailed analytics and a concise leadership report.

Define the data before the metric

One row represents: one material narrative claim linked to a defined metric, source snapshot and reviewer.

Useful fields: Claim ID, statement, metric definition, period, perimeter, supporting table, source snapshot, explanation status, uncertainty note and approver.

Start from approved finance and operating views. For each claim, identify the exact supporting amount and comparison. Separate an observation such as income growth from an inferred explanation such as improved cross-sell. Keep conditional forecasts visibly distinct. Remove a statement if no current evidence supports it.

Worked example

The following records and amounts are invented to show the method. They are not customer results, industry benchmarks or a forecast of Covirage performance.

Draft claim Evidence needed Safer wording
We grew 20% organically Comparable-perimeter bridge Total grew 20%; comparable book grew 2%
Service caused higher retention Causal evidence not present Retention rose; service changes merit review
Pipeline guarantees next quarter Confirmed outcomes not present Scenario income is conditional

The revised statements remain useful while preserving the limits of the evidence. Leadership can see both total scale and comparable-book movement, and it can discuss hypotheses without mistaking them for demonstrated causes.

Use the result in a review

  1. Have finance check amounts and operations check outcome definitions before circulating the narrative.
  2. Ask whether each headline would still read correctly without the chart beside it.
  3. Include material data limitations near the claim they affect rather than hiding them in an appendix.

Checks before publishing

  • Verify that every percentage has a stated numerator, denominator and comparison period.
  • Trace every material amount to a reconciled table or an explicitly labeled estimate.
  • Keep acquired growth, internal transfers and provisional periods out of unlabeled organic results.

Where this analysis can mislead

Traceability does not make an explanation true. A correctly sourced correlation can still be interpreted incorrectly. Board reports may also require professional review beyond this management-writing method.

Explore this question with your own data

Bring a small, authorized sample to Covirage for insurance agencies and brokers. Use the sample to discuss the fields and views your business needs. A dashboard or AI analyst can help explore this question when the required data and definitions are available; missing records still need to be resolved.

Upload sample data to check its structure. Keep unnecessary personal, claims and policyholder details out of an initial sample. The sample check does not establish that every analysis in this guide is available automatically.

Questions people ask

Can a source citation prove the cause of an agency performance change?

No. It supports the underlying observation. Causal explanations need additional evidence and should be labeled when they remain hypotheses.
