Institutional trading business revenue analysis by client and desk

Explain institutional desk revenue changes through client activity and earned revenue per unit. Build a spreadsheet bridge from execution and desk income exports, then reconcile it to finance.

The short answerInstitutional trading business revenue analysis compares recognized desk income by client, activity and earned revenue per unit. Start with a reconciled income export, attach comparable transaction volumes, and separate volume changes from changes in revenue yield. Keep commissions, financing income and inventory gains in distinct categories so the bridge explains operating revenue without confusing it with securities turnover.

Institutional trading business revenue analysis explains a desk's income change through client activity and the revenue earned on that activity. Start with recognized revenue, match it to comparable execution volumes, and build a bridge that equals the change in the desk income report. Securities bought or sold are activity, not the firm's sales revenue.

The practical question is whether revenue moved because clients traded more, the client mix changed, or the desk earned a different amount on comparable business. Answer that before setting client coverage priorities or revising a desk budget.

Set the revenue boundary first

Separate agency commissions, client facilitation income, financing income and inventory valuation effects. They have different drivers. Goldman Sachs describes commissions and fees from executing and clearing client transactions separately from market-making revenue in its 2025 annual report. A single revenue-per-trade figure across those categories conceals more than it explains.

This worked example covers agency cash-equity execution commissions at a hypothetical US broker-dealer. Its activity unit is shares executed. The earned yield is commission revenue per share, after revenue adjustments. It is a commercial yield, not gross profit margin or the client's investment return.

For a principal desk, use the finance-approved client revenue attribution already in the export. Do not infer earned spread from the difference between unrelated purchase and sale totals. Carry inventory revaluation, hedging and funding items separately when those items form part of the desk's reported income.

Prepare the exports

Bring the execution summary and the desk income detail for both periods. Retain execution reference, revenue posting reference, client ID, desk, activity date, accounting period, product, currency, executed quantity and recognized revenue. Retain cancellations, corrections and fee adjustments with their signs.

Make one comparison row per desk, client and comparable product. Aggregate revenue postings before matching them to execution summaries if the files have different row counts. Joining every revenue posting to every execution for a client can duplicate both measures.

Use a stable client grouping. A renamed fund or a move between coverage teams should not create apparent lost and new business. Keep unmapped clients in an explicit bucket until the owner resolves them.

The desk-to-benchmark reconciliation checklist covers the separate job of aligning desk figures with an external submission. Establish that boundary before borrowing a benchmark total for this analysis.

Calculate activity and earned yield

The example compares the second and third quarters of 2026. Each row contains comparable shares and recognized commissions for the same client and desk in each period. Dollar yields are shown to three decimal places; all calculations use the underlying values.

Desk / client Prior shares Prior yield (USD/share) Prior revenue (USD) Current shares Current yield (USD/share) Current revenue (USD)
Electronic / Cedar pension 10,000,000 0.012 120,000 12,000,000 0.011 132,000
High-touch / Harbor funds 8,000,000 0.015 120,000 7,000,000 0.016 112,000
Electronic / Alder adviser 6,000,000 0.020 120,000 8,000,000 0.018 144,000
Total 24,000,000 360,000 27,000,000 388,000

With the first row in spreadsheet row 2 and the columns in the order shown, calculate prior and current yields in C2 and F2, respectively:

=IF(B2=0,"",D2/B2)
=IF(E2=0,"",G2/E2)

Do not replace missing or zero-volume yields with zero. Route those rows to a separate adjustment review. A fee correction can legitimately have revenue without current shares.

The summed revenue rises by $28,000, or 7.8%, calculated as (388000-360000)/360000 and rounded to one decimal place. For the broader distinction between units sold and company revenue, see the total revenue formula.

Build a bridge that adds up

Use prior yield for the activity effect and current activity for the yield effect. This assigns the interaction between volume and yield to the yield effect, so the two effects reconcile exactly.

Activity effect = (Current quantity - Prior quantity) × Prior yield

Yield effect = Current quantity × (Current yield - Prior yield)

Put these formulas in H2 and I2 and fill down:

=(E2-B2)*C2
=E2*(F2-C2)
Desk / client Activity effect (USD) Yield effect (USD) Revenue change (USD)
Electronic / Cedar pension 24,000 -12,000 12,000
High-touch / Harbor funds -15,000 7,000 -8,000
Electronic / Alder adviser 40,000 -16,000 24,000
Total 49,000 -21,000 28,000

The proof is $360,000 + $49,000 - $21,000 = $388,000. The spreadsheet residual must equal zero after rounding to cents:

=ROUND(SUM(G2:G4)-SUM(D2:D4)-SUM(H2:H4)-SUM(I2:I4),2)

Activity contributes $49,000, including changes in the mix of these clients. Lower earned yields remove $21,000. That explains why higher activity does not translate proportionally into revenue. The broader revenue driver analysis describes the same reconciliation discipline across businesses.

Turn the bridge into a desk discussion

Cedar and Alder need a review of fee schedules, rebates and execution-service mix before anyone calls the yield decline a pricing problem. Harbor needs a client activity discussion because improved yield only partly offsets lower volume. The bridge identifies the question; it does not establish the cause.

Finance owns the revenue tie. Desk management owns the explanation of commercial movements, and client coverage confirms account changes. The institutional trading business dashboard is the place to organize the recurring measures after this reconciliation works.

Keep execution quality on its own review agenda. FINRA Rule 5310 requires reasonable diligence to obtain the best market for customer transactions under the rule's circumstances. Earned commission yield is not evidence that this obligation has been met.

Where it goes wrong

  • Gross consideration treated as revenue. Client securities turnover can dwarf the commission earned. Use the desk income amount approved by finance.
  • Different activity units combined. Shares, contracts and fixed-income notional are not additive. Calculate yield within comparable products and add dollar bridge effects afterward.
  • Settlement dates mixed with accounting periods. Align revenue and activity to the stated policy, and list timing adjustments explicitly.
  • Corrections counted twice. Preserve the original reference and signed adjustment. Confirm that a corrected execution has not also remained as a second active row.
  • All desk income forced onto clients. Retain an unassigned or non-client category for genuine desk-level items. Arbitrary allocation makes client rankings look more precise than the records support.

Questions people ask

Is trading volume the same as trading revenue?

No. Volume measures activity, such as shares executed or a product's notional amount. Revenue is the income recognized from that activity. A large transaction can generate little commission, while a smaller transaction can earn a higher fee. Compare volume with revenue using a consistent unit.

How should a desk calculate revenue per client?

Sum the recognized income rows assigned to a stable client identifier for the period. Include signed corrections and apply the desk's revenue attribution policy consistently. Keep any unassigned income visible, and reconcile client totals plus unassigned items to the desk control total before ranking relationships.

Does higher revenue per share mean better execution?

Revenue per share measures the firm's earned commission yield. It does not establish the quality of execution delivered to clients. Execution quality requires its own review of prices and relevant order circumstances. Keep the commercial revenue review separate from that assessment.
