Pharmaceutical sales analytics compares commercial sales across territories, products, accounts and channels. Build a net-sales reconciliation from aggregated exports, calculate the movement and check what the result can support.
Pharmaceutical sales analytics compares commercial sales across territories, products, accounts and channels after aligning periods and deductions. Start with aggregated sales exports, establish the net-sales total, then explain the movement within that total. A territory ranking is useful only when its rows reconcile to the commercial finance report.
Choose one basis: manufacturer sales to customers, distributor sales onward, or another clearly identified commercial measure. Keep those bases separate. A wholesaler purchase and that wholesaler's subsequent sale can describe the same goods at different points in the channel.
For this workflow, use manufacturer net sales recorded for the period. US public-company presentation rules describe tangible-product net sales after discounts, returns and allowances in Regulation S-X, Rule 5-03. Your finance team determines which posted deductions and approved accruals belong in its reporting measure; the worksheet follows that definition.
Net sales = Invoiced sales − Recorded sales deductions
Sales change = Current net sales − Prior net sales
Growth rate = Sales change / Prior net sales
Do not substitute cash received for sales. Also distinguish commercial outcomes from activity counts: the separate guide to sales analytics and sales intelligence explains those broader categories.
Use a commercial finance export aggregated to period, territory, product, account group and channel. Retain the original source reference behind each aggregate so finance can inspect a discrepancy. This analysis needs no clinical records or patient-level information.
Use these columns on a Google Sheets tab named Sales:
| Column | Field | Check before calculating |
|---|---|---|
| A | Period, stored as text | Same reporting cutoff across files |
| B | Territory | Consistent territory assignment |
| C | Product identifier | Same product and package definition |
| D | Channel | Mutually exclusive channel assignment |
| E | Invoiced sales (USD) | Agrees with commercial finance scope |
| F | Sales deductions (USD) | Positive deduction amounts in this example |
| G | Net sales (USD) | Calculated from E less F |
Keep a product key alongside the commercial name. The FDA describes the NDC as a drug identifier and publishes product listings in its National Drug Code Directory. Use the identifier your export actually carries, and check package conversions before comparing units.
If an account moved between territories, choose whether to report the original assignment or restate both periods to the current assignment. Record that choice above the table. Otherwise, a reassignment can appear as growth for one territory and a loss for another without changing company sales.
In G2, calculate each export row's net sales and fill down:
=E2-F2
For East territory in September 2026, with periods stored as the text shown below:
=SUMIFS(Sales!$G$2:$G$5000,Sales!$A$2:$A$5000,"2026-09",Sales!$B$2:$B$5000,"East")
Change the period criterion to "2025-09" for the comparison. Add product or channel criteria for a narrower view. Google's SUMIFS documentation specifies how multiple criteria restrict the summed rows. Extend every range together if the export is longer.

An illustrative US manufacturer compares September 2026 with September 2025. Product A and Product B are fictional labels. Deductions include the finance-approved adjustments for this commercial sales scope; all dollar figures below are exact.
| Territory | Product | Channel | Prior net sales (USD) | Current invoices (USD) | Current deductions (USD) | Current net sales (USD) | Change (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| East | A | Wholesale | 240,000 | 330,000 | 79,200 | 250,800 | 10,800 |
| East | B | Specialty | 180,000 | 240,000 | 36,000 | 204,000 | 24,000 |
| West | A | Specialty | 200,000 | 240,000 | 52,800 | 187,200 | -12,800 |
| West | B | Wholesale | 135,000 | 180,000 | 27,000 | 153,000 | 18,000 |
| Total | 755,000 | 990,000 | 195,000 | 795,000 | 40,000 |
The control is 990,000 − 195,000 = $795,000. Growth is 40,000 / 755,000 = 5.3%, rounded to one decimal place. In a summary laid out like this table, current net sales in G2 is =E2-F2, and change in H2 is =G2-D2.
East contributes $34,800 of the increase and West contributes $5,200. The product view gives Product A a $2,000 decline and Product B a $42,000 increase. Wholesale contributes $28,800 and specialty contributes $11,200. Each view independently adds to $40,000; adding the views together would count the same change repeatedly.
For East Product A, the supporting unit export shows:
| Measure | September 2025 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Comparable sellable packs | 6,000 | 6,600 |
| Net sales (USD) | 240,000 | 250,800 |
| Net sales per pack (USD) | 40.00 | 38.00 |
Using prior realized revenue for the unit effect, the extra packs contribute (6,600−6,000) × 40 = $24,000. The realized-revenue effect is 6,600 × (38−40) = −$13,200. Together they explain the $10,800 increase.
That second effect includes the recorded deduction burden; it does not by itself identify a contractual price change. Review the underlying credit notes and returns before assigning a commercial explanation. Different contract businesses need different reconciliations, as the neighboring SaaS sales revenue analysis illustrates.
Commercial finance owns the net-sales definition and reconciliation. Sales operations owns territory and account mappings. Commercial leaders use the agreed result to decide which product, account or channel deserves investigation, with the underlying rows available for review.

Use aggregated commercial sales records with a reporting period, territory, product identifier, account group, channel, invoiced amount and recorded deductions. Add comparable product units when available. Keep the finance control total and the territory mapping used for each reporting period.
A sales comparison shows an observed movement, not its cause. Inventory timing, account transfers, returns and product availability can all affect reported sales. Assessing a promotional effect requires a separate study with an appropriate design and agreed assumptions.
Use net sales for the finance outcome and retain gross sales and deductions as separate explanatory columns. Apply the company's approved treatment of rebates, returns and other adjustments consistently. A higher invoiced amount can coexist with a smaller increase in net sales.
