Measure online banking activation, active usage and task completion from aggregate exports. Follow a worked channel comparison, exact spreadsheet formulas and reconciliation checks.
Digital analytics in banking compares activation, active usage and task completion from aggregate channel exports. Establish the population and reporting window first, then calculate each rate from its own numerator and denominator. A clean funnel shows where to investigate service performance without making assumptions about individual customers.
Ask the digital operations owner for an account summary and a task-attempt summary. Use approved business segment labels already supplied in those files. Neither report needs names, account numbers or individual activity histories for this comparison.
For a September review, define eligible accounts and activated accounts at September 30, 2026. Define active accounts as those with at least one successful digital login during September, within that same activated population. Activation is a status at the cutoff; activity is an event during the month. They answer different questions.
Next choose one task, such as completing bill-payment setup. Count distinct attempts started during September and how many of those attempts completed by September 30. A late-month attempt still open at the cutoff is incomplete in this report. Keep the observation rule identical across channels.
The broader retail banking analytics overview covers other business questions. This review stays with recorded channel adoption and usage.
The example is an illustrative US regional bank. Each account has one assigned reporting channel at the cutoff, and established and new accounts are disjoint segments. Every task attempt inherits that account's reporting group, making the rows additive. This assignment supports a bankwide comparison; it does not describe every channel an account actually used.
Put these fields in columns A:G, with the first data row in row 2:
| Channel | Segment | Eligible accounts | Activated accounts | Active accounts | Started attempts | Completed attempts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Established | 8,000 | 6,000 | 4,200 | 3,000 | 2,400 |
| Mobile | New | 2,000 | 1,200 | 720 | 600 | 420 |
| Web | Established | 5,000 | 3,000 | 1,800 | 1,500 | 1,050 |
| Web | New | 1,000 | 400 | 200 | 160 | 96 |
| Total | 16,000 | 10,600 | 6,920 | 5,260 | 3,966 |
The task counts measure attempts, while the first three numeric columns measure accounts. A user may make several attempts, so task starts need not equal active accounts. Obtain each measure at the same channel-and-segment grain before putting them beside each other.
For wider acquisition questions, use advertising analytics. Ad clicks and digital banking task attempts have different starting populations.
Activation rate = Activated accounts / Eligible accounts
Active usage rate = Active accounts / Activated accounts
Task completion rate = Completed attempts / Started attempts
Enter these formulas in H2, I2 and J2, then fill through row 5:
=IF(C2=0,"",D2/C2)
=IF(D2=0,"",E2/D2)
=IF(F2=0,"",G2/F2)
Format the results as percentages. Here they are displayed to two decimal places; keep the underlying values unrounded for totals.
| Channel and segment | Activation | Active usage | Completion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile, established | 75.00% | 70.00% | 80.00% |
| Mobile, new | 60.00% | 60.00% | 70.00% |
| Web, established | 60.00% | 60.00% | 70.00% |
| Web, new | 40.00% | 50.00% | 60.00% |
| All reporting groups | 66.25% | 65.28% | 75.40% |
The bankwide formulas divide summed counts:
=SUM(D2:D5)/SUM(C2:C5)
=SUM(E2:E5)/SUM(D2:D5)
=SUM(G2:G5)/SUM(F2:F5)
Do not replace missing observations with zero. A known zero denominator produces a blank above; a missing source value needs investigation before calculating. Microsoft documents IFERROR as returning a chosen value when a formula errors. Using it to turn every error into zero would hide a broken report.
Place a channel label in L2. The completion calculation below sums that channel's counts before dividing. Microsoft's SUMIFS documentation explains how the function sums values meeting specified criteria.
=SUMIFS(G2:G5,A2:A5,L2)/SUMIFS(F2:F5,A2:A5,L2)
Mobile has 3,600 started attempts and 2,820 completions: 78.33%. Web has 1,660 starts and 1,146 completions: 69.04%. The check is 3,600 + 1,660 = 5,260 starts and 2,820 + 1,146 = 3,966 completions. Dividing those reconciled totals gives the bankwide 75.40%.
Also tie eligible and activated totals back to their cutoff summaries, and active accounts back to the supplied monthly account count. Within every row, activated must not exceed eligible, active must not exceed activated, and completed attempts must not exceed starts under the definitions used here. Resolve failures before explaining a channel difference.

Web new accounts have the lowest activation and completion rates in this example. That is a reason for the digital service owner to review enrollment instructions, support contacts and task definitions. The table alone does not establish why completion differs.
Separate established and new accounts before deciding that a channel changed. A different segment mix can move its overall rate even when each segment's rate stays stable. Use the same calculation next month and document changes to account eligibility or channel assignment.
With self-service analytics, the useful starting point remains a defined question and a reconciled export. The AI analytics overview explains the broader files-first approach.
Bring an aggregate account summary and a matching task-attempt export with their reporting definitions. Covirage maps the columns; its tools compute and check the rates, and the external AI model explains the results with every figure traced to its rows. Create a free Covirage account, which takes about a minute, and bring a sample of your own data after setting up your business.

Adoption measures activation within the eligible population. Active usage measures whether activated accounts used the service during a defined period. A bank can have many activated accounts and limited recent activity, so report both measures with their separate denominators.
Only when the groups are mutually exclusive or the supplied export already removes overlap. An account using both channels appears twice in separate channel counts. Assign one reporting channel per account or keep channel totals separate from the bankwide unique-account total.
Use completed attempts divided by started attempts for the same task, channel, initiation period and observation cutoff. Document retries and canceled attempts. An account count divided by an attempt count measures something different and should not be labeled task completion.
