Period cut

The calendar convention an export or report uses: calendar month, 4-4-5 fiscal period, week ending Sunday, invoice date or ship date. Stated on every export; inherited by every report from its ledger of record; compared like to like, with a 53-week period flagged.

Two Marches

Calendar March and fiscal period three differ by a week of invoices. Both are right; the cut is the difference.

Bridged, not summed

A calendar month does not nest in a 4-4-5 period. No identity holds between them.

How it is used

Each export and report states its calendar convention: calendar month, 4-4-5 fiscal periods, week ending day, invoice date or ship date. Comparisons are made only between like cuts.

Example

Sales reports on calendar months by order date. Finance reports 4-4-5 periods by invoice date. March differs by $310,000, all of it timing.

Where it goes wrong

Two correct reports compared as if they used the same calendar.
