Claims band

A stated range of loss ratio per line, with the broker's own historical non-renewal rate and median rate change at renewal for policies in that band. It turns a client's loss ratio into a renewal risk with a number behind it.

From the book

The non-renewal rate per band is the broker's own renewal history, not a market figure.

Open claims separately

A large open claim inside the renewal window is on the list whatever the ratio says.

How it is computed

Clients are grouped by loss ratio on a line into stated bands, and for each band the broker computes its own historical non-renewal rate and median rate change at renewal.

Example

Clients with a loss ratio above 80 percent renewed 71 percent of the time against 93 percent for those under 40 percent, and saw a median rate rise of 22 percent. The high band is contacted ninety days earlier.

Where it goes wrong

Claims handled by one team and renewals by another. The clients most likely to leave are known to the claims team and not flagged to the account executive.
